What You’ll Learn

The English for Healthcare track of ESL program is designed for non-native speakers of English who have a background in the medical field but require additional English language skills specific to the medical field. The program is also intended for students who wish to improve their language skills to pass Occupational English Test (OET) for Healthcare Professionals.

The program courses aim to help students grow their capacity to communicate in a healthcare setting by focusing on English reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Through readings, role-plays, listening activities, and discussions, students will learn how to communicate effectively with patients and allied healthcare workers. The courses will also cover vocabulary and language structures related to basic medical terminology, medical law and ethics, and human health and disease conditions.

To take ESL for Healthcare courses, students must complete and pass ESL040 Intermediate Grammar, Reading, Listening and Speaking, and Writing or earn a minimum total score of C1 (Upper Intermediate) or higher on the Michigan EPT.
